 CHIEF ZUBEIRU SHARDOW MULEH

                      (1847-1922)

 Chief Zubeiru Shardow Muleh, the patriarch of the Shardow family of Accra, was born in 1847 in a village called Muleh, near the Kainji Lake Forest Reserve, in what was then British West Africa (now Nigeria). 

     In 1872 following a chieftaincy dispute in which his father and elder brother

were both killed, Chief Zubeiru relocated to the Gold Coast (now Ghana), residing in Cow Lane, Accra.  (see DOCUMENT 1).

 

    Chief Zubeiru Shardow had five wives, nine children and many grand-children. 

    His first wife was Adiza Dannfa, mother of Suleiman, Essa and Lantana.

Adiza Dannfa died very young, barely four months after the birth of her

daughter Lantana.

 

The second wife was Hawawu Kwarley Glover (aka. Ankpa Glover), 

mother of Hadiza Shardow (aka. Nman Danjo ).

 

The third wife was the mother of Auntie Mai Dauka (aka Auntie Iko).

 

The fourth wife was Shafi (aka Aaten), mother of Baa Karami, Baba Alhassan

and Iddirisu.

Chief Zubeiru Shardow died on the 21st of November, 1922.

  • MAI-DAUKA SHARDOW (Auntie Iko): She was the fourth child of Chief Zubeiru Shardow. She was married off at the age of fifteen and lived in Lagos Nigeria for the rest of her adult life. She had an only child, a girl who unfortunately died at a very young age.

  • MAZA AWAJE SHARDOW: He was the fifth child who was named after Native Officer Maza Awaje, a fellow tribesman and good friend of Chief Zubeiru Shardow. He died in infancy.

  • IDDRISU SHARDOW (Baba Iddi): He was  the ninth child of Chief Zubeiru Shardow. He was an Islamic teacher.  He died in Madinah, Saudi Arabia while performing the holy pilgrimage in 1949. He travelled to Mecca by road a few days after officiating at the naming ceremony of Chief MND Jawula, son of Hajia Suweibatu Shardow in May 1949.  His wife, Gado, was nursing his five months old daughter, Bintu Shardow when he travelled.

  • HABIBA MAI-RIGA SHARDOW (Nma Afienya): She was the youngest child of Chief Zubeiru Shardow who  lived most of her adult life in a town called Afienya. She died in 1986. She had no children.

  • BRAIMAH DANGANA SHARDOW*: He was Chief Zubeiru Shardow's nephew and a member of his household from infancy. He was an accomplished champion jockey. He died on the 6th of August 1932. He had five children:   1. Sani       2. Rakiya (Auntie KK)        3. Adamu  4. Hassana     5. Sinatu (Gado)
